Doctor Harris was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his contribution to the war effort, particularly during the first battle of Tanga, fought between November 1-5, 1914. During the war, Harris corresponded regularly with his elder brother, Tatham Harris, then serving as a judge in India.
