Something a little different – an Algerian Spahi (French officer) commemorative locket [on Instagram]
The South African Heritage portal featured the Victoria Falls Cenotaph recently.
CWGC released its 2023/4 Non-Commemoration report in April.
Some info from CWGC on Herbert Baker, the man behind the South African and other memorials.
Copies of The East Africa Standard newspaper have been digitised and can be found at http://erepository.uonbi.ac.ke/handle/11295/157118/browse – thanks to David Reeve of Kenya Police Association for bringing this to my attention.
For members on Facebook, I came across this video of the 2018 exhibition in Zambia on WW1 – The Untold Story of an African Soldier – https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?ref=watch_permalink&v=294045828118255 and the booklet that was available at the museum.
You can now find pdfs of the first two volumes of the The Journal of the Royal West African Frontier Force on the GWAA website. Others will be added in due course. Many thanks to Harry Fecitt for supplying the copies and to Keith Steward, the editor/compiler of the journals, for permission to make the journals more widely available through the GWAA.
For researchers who are interested in African involvement in WW2, you might have noticed material is slowly being incorporated into the website. Gerry van Tonder has kindly helped with creating lists, the first of which are in the new spreadsheet – WW2 names.
There are lots of names from both wars to still be added to the site – all to help researchers in different ways. If you would like to assist with transcribing/adding names or catalogue listings (for any WW1 Africa related archive) or know of good sources for online material or catalogues for archives, please let me know.
