Intelligence

When the word intelligence is mentioned in connection with World War 1 in Africa, the name Richard Meinertzhagen generally springs to mind. He is definitely the most well-known of the intelligence agents but not the only one. Others who spring to mind are Philip Pretorius – Smuts’ chief Scout and Arnold Weinholt who wrote an account of his experiences.

For starters, there’s an article by Anne Samson providing an overview published in Sub-Rosa (a summary will soon be available) and another by Harry Fecitt on Intelligence Awards in East Africa. Both were written for the UK Military Intelligence Museum.

The men often referred to as Scouts were involved in Intellegence work and another significant topic is that of Photography.
