I am researching Captain Bradford of the Yorkshire Regiment who was attached to the Nigeria Regiment and who is listed on our war memorial; I am trying to build a profile so that we can honour him on the 100th anniversary of the day he died in a couple of months time.

I don't have any confirmed details on his secondment, but it has been suggested he was with the 4th NR, that he served with them in the Camroons 1914-5. I don't know where he was afterwards, but he was returning home from Nigeria on leave in 1917 when his boat was sunk.

There is possibly a 4NR war diary and his personal service record at Kew but I can't get there, nor do I have the funds to purchase either (this is a community project), so I'm seeking any information that could help me understand his activity in Africa.

  1. I have not been able to find an explanation for the story of P. J. Pretorius and his connection to the Konigsberg not being part of the official history of the war. Can anyone enlighten me about this?

My best wishes to you and yours.

  2. As an Army Officer I am about to be posted to Kenya for a couple of years. I would be interested in running a battlefield tour of the WW1 sites in the country next year and would welcome suggestions and help from the experts.

  3. I am currently attempting to research the life story of one of the men recorded on our local ww1 memorial. His name us Sidney Evans and I know he served with ‘Bowker’s Horse’, He died 28th November 1918 at Florida Farm and is buried at the cemetery in Nakuru. I have discovered a newspaper article which names Samuel Evans claiming probate in East Africa. I am interested in how he came to be in East Africa and the circumstances of his death, also whether Samel remained there. I wonder if anyone is able to help?
